How this came about

Local government reorganisation (LGR) is a term used when councils look to change the way that they are structured.

In the past, this has largely been when councils have asked government to consider a change. This time, government has required areas with two tiers of council (county councils and districts) to come up with plans for having just one tier of council.

The intention is that changes will make the system simpler, more connected, and better able to meet local needs.

LGR is an opportunity to create stronger, more sustainable councils that are better able to meet the needs of Devon’s communities.

Throughout the transition, our focus is on ensuring a smooth and well-managed move from existing council structures to new arrangements, while maintaining essential services and minimising disruption.

By working closely with partners, staff and residents, we aim to deliver positive long-term outcomes, improved services and better value for the people of Devon.

About this website

This website, called Future Devon has been developed by the 11 councils across Devon. It brings together information and updates about these changes in one trusted place, helping people understand what is changing, why it is happening, and what it means for you.

Once the new councils are established in April 2028, there will be new websites created for each of them, so this website is temporary. We are committed to keeping you informed throughout the transition.
